Position Overview |
|
Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) is seeking a Science teacher who is excited about teaching in Middle and Senior School. This is a 1.0 FTE continuing position after the successful completion of the probationary year. This position will teach Science to Grade 7 through 12 students at STS in a collaborative, co-teaching environment. This includes: fostering positive relationships with students; creating engaging and appropriate lesson plans and activities, maintaining a safe and inclusive classroom environment; utilizing appropriate instructional techniques and strategies, and conducting meaningful assessments to provide feedback that improves student learning and achievement. The position may include an instructional leadership element for a well-qualified candidate. The successful candidate must have an Alberta teaching certificate or be eligible to obtain one. Ideally, they also have experience in engineering, science, art, and/or industrial design. Though not necessarily prerequisites for this role, knowledge of, and/or training in, the IB Middle Years Programme or Diploma Programme and experience working in an independent school setting are considered assets. In order to support student learning in a technology-rich environment, candidates should have experience using technology in the classroom. All faculty are expected to contribute to STS’s robust offering of co-curricular activities and demonstrate commitment to students’ growth outside of the classroom. Teachers new to STS participate in a dynamic and supportive mentorship program. |

Core Areas of Responsibility |
· Teach to the Alberta Program of Studies, specifically Science 7-10, Biology 20/30, Chemistry 20/30, and Physics 20/30. · Demonstrate the competencies outlined in Alberta Education’s Teaching Quality Standard (TQS). · Abide by policies laid out in the Education Act (2023). · Ensure the safety and well-being of our students in accordance with STS procedures and policies. · Understand and implement the Mission and Vision of the School. · Collaborate with school administration, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) Coordinator, other teachers in the department, and other faculty at STS. · Model the Learner Profile of the International Baccalaureate (IB). · Create a supportive learning environment for students that encourages inquiry and offers opportunities to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. · Utilize a variety of effective teaching, classroom management and assessment practices in support of student achievement. · Conduct formative and summative assessment of students, provide detailed, effective, and immediate feedback to support student learning as well as evaluate achievement and report results to students and parents. · Use data-informed strategies to understand students’ learning abilities and apply teaching interventions to support learning. · Maintain effective, proactive, and ongoing communication with parents, colleagues and students. · Utilize technology to promote innovative and effective teaching and learning. · Provide pastoral care to students in the capacity of an advisor to support student achievement and well-being. |
Qualifications and Experience |
· A comprehensive understanding of the IB MYP requirements is preferable; · Demonstrated ability to reflect on one’s own professional practice; · Comprehensive understanding of best practices for middle school learners; · Commitment to cultivating trusting relationships with students, parents and colleagues; · Model exemplary teaching in the subject area; · Demonstrate knowledge of current educational research on student engagement and deep learning; · Well-developed and demonstratable executive functioning skills that engender confidence in decision-making; · Self-motivated, detail-oriented and adaptable to changing priorities and procedures; · Willingness to support school-sanctioned student information and learning management systems that promote whole school accountability, scope and sequence planning and record keeping; · Works professionally and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. |
Professional Development |
· Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and reflection to refine teaching practice; · Engage in ongoing professional learning; · Keep current on educational research about how students learn and factors that influence students’ learning and achievement; · Ensure that skill development and technology use by students keeps pace with changing needs at the post-secondary level to ensure that students are well prepared for the next stage of their learning. |
