Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY: The CDL Instructor is responsible for providing instruction for classroom courses, road and range training, defensive driving, and other applicable training / re-training activities for students to obtain their commercial driving license. Stevens Transport provides CDL training and job placement for drivers looking to begin a new career and leading continuing education/re-training for seasoned drivers.  

 

We are looking for positive and energetic individuals to educate and train students to be safe and defensive drivers. You are great at explaining concepts and find purpose in drawing on personal experiences to relate the material presented. 

 

This is not an OTR position. You will be home every day. 

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

Key Responsibilities  

  • Teaching student drivers how and where to diagnose vehicle malfunctions through pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections 

  • Observing over-the-road skills (backing, lane control, axle weights, etc.)  

  • Instructing how to use an auto transmission in different driving conditions (highway, city, night vs. day, inclement weather, etc.) 

  • Showing how to use on-board vehicle communication and routing systems 

  • Emphasizing (and re-emphasizing!) the importance of safety 

  • Evaluating progress and grading students throughout the program 

  • Maintaining student files in compliance with company and regulatory standards 

  • Providing exceptional customer service to all students 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Active CDL (Class A) license 

  • Clean drug screen, background, and motor vehicle records 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent 

  • Effective communication and presentation skills 

  • Patient and sensitive to the learning needs of others 

  • Sensible judgement and capable of handling changing priorities with flexibility 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Basic computer skills 

  • Classroom and range demonstration 

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Driving and managing a tractor trailer 

  • Vehicle control 

  • Backing 

  • Pre-trip inspections 

  • On-road driving 

  • Lane changes 

  • Turning 

  • Braking 

  • Record maintenance 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time 

  • Exposure to changing temperatures and inclement weather 

  • Ability to stretch, bend, move freely during training exercises 

 

Work Experience: 

  • 3+ years of recent verifiable OTR driving experience within the last 10 years
